Eyelash Weakening or Loss can occur for several reasons, including various skin diseases.
The upper eyelid has about 200 eyelashes that are distributed between three and five rows and the lower eyelid has about 100 smaller, thinner eyelashes. About two eyelashes are lost per eye per day.
Eyelashes have a growth phase of about 30-45 days and 30% of the eyelashes are in this phase, followed by the catagen or latency phase in which growth stops and lasts 2-4 weeks and ends with the telogen phase, a stage in which the eyelash is maintained until it detaches from the follicle and can last up to 100 days.
Certain external conditions can negatively influence the eyelashes causing dryness, weakness and loss. The main causes are usually autoimmune diseases where antibodies attack the hair follicles, hyperthyroidism, exposure to UV rays, use of make-up that does not comply with safety regulations, hygiene habits, poor diet in essential nutrients (low levels of vitamins B6, E and C make eyelashes brittle and dry), ophthalmological infections, use of false eyelashes or stress.
